e-Nature: America's Wildlife Resource

Grades 4–7. Operated by the National Wildlife Federation, this site contains the "sights and sounds" of 5,500 species.

Live@Exploratorium

Grades 4–7. Sponsored by the children's museum in San Francisco, these Web casts present "live video or audio broadcasts over the Internet."

Museum of Science and Industry

Grades 6–9. Kids can take a virtual tour of the U-505 submarine, learn about genetics via a chick hatchery, and visit a coal mine. Be sure to check out the archives of former exhibits at this premier Chicago museum site.

Smithsonian Education - Students

"Discover education resources and information, lesson plans, field trips, and fun interactive activities for educators, families, and students. All based on Smithsonian museum collections and research."

The Physics Classroom

Grades 9–12. Hosted by Studyworks and aimed at high-school physics students, this site links to physics tutorials, a multimedia physics studio, and other resources.

The Shedd Aquarium

Grades 5–8. Visit "the world's largest indoor aquarium" and explore the oceanarium and wild-reef exhibits. A series of interactive learning activities, well-written FAQs, lesson plans, bilingual fact sheets, and superb still photos round out the site.

 

 

Snow Crystals

Grades 9–12. Billed as an online guide to snowflakes, snow crystals, and other ice phenomena, this includes tips on making and photographing snowflakes and provides information on the various mathematical forms and physics of snowflakes.

Grades 7–10. This site, which we first introduced in our 2001 list, fulfills its mission to explore the science behind today's news. A gallery of "cool science images" and interactive options engage learners of all ages.

Animal Diversity

Animal Diversity Web (ADW) is an online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology at the University of Michigan. Thousands of species accounts about individual animal species. These may include text, pictures of living animals, photographs and movies of specimens, and/or recordings of sounds. Students write the text of these accounts and we cannot guarantee their accuracy.
